Alangulam is located in Ramapuram. Its a part of greater Chennai Corporation, located west of the city. Ramapuram is located between Manapakkam and Valasaravakkam. The suburb has experienced rapid development with the advent of small scale industries around the area. Residential colonies are present adjoining and within the catchment area of the Lake. Catchment Area or drainage basin or watershed is the extent or an area of land where surface water from rain and waste water let out from households converges to a single point at a lower elevation, such as a river, lake, reservoir, estuary, wetland, sea, or ocean. The drainage basin acts as a funnel by collecting all the water within the area covered by the basin and channeling it to a single point.
