Kumarappapuram Kulam

Kumarappapuram Kulam

KumarappapuramKulam has been chosen for restoration by CMWSSB as part of the Sustainable Water Mission. This pond is located on the east side of Perumal Koil Street  Assisi Nagar Link Road. The pond is roughly rectangular in shape. The pond is covered with a fence and a gate. There is no inlet, outlet or revetment provided. The bund is eroded. Solid and liquid waste dumping and diversion was happening in the pond. Shallow borewells of 20m to 25m depth are the common groundwater extraction structures in the area. The Total Dissolved Solids of the borewell water varies between 600 to 1500 mg/lt. The quality deteriorates with increase in depth. The restoration of this pond would help in sustaining the water level in the surrounding areas. Now the pond is fully restored under the Chennai Smart City project fund

Area, Zone, Division

AREA: 1011.715 Sq.mtrs    ZONE: 2    DIVISION: 17

Location

This pond is in Division 27 of Zone  3 and is located on the Perumal Koil Stret  Assisi Nagar Link Road. It is located to the East of the road. The pond is located at North Latitude 13 9'7.47" and East Longitude 8013'55.13".

Field Observation and Inferences

The pond is roughly rectangular in shape. It almost fully fenced and provided with a gate. There is no inlet, outlet or revetment provided. The bund is eroded. Minor amount of solid and liquid waste dumping and diversion is happening in the pond. The pond can be easily renovated and restored. Shallow borewells of 20m to 25m depth are the common groundwater extraction structures in the area. The Total Dissolved Solids of the borewell water varies between 600 to 1500 mg/lt. The quality deteriorates with increase in depth. Hence restoring the pond would help in sustaining the water level in the surrounding areas. Based on the Total Station Survey output, it is inferred that the total area of the pond is 6822.31 sq.m and the total length of the bund is 370.09m. The average depth of the pond is about 2.3m.

Impact of Urbanisation

The imagery extracted from google earth on 21.03.2016 and 01.06.2002 is presented below and no major change could be detected.

Pond Storage Estimation

The actual volume stored in the tank during 1987  a normal rainfall year - after losses due to evaporation and recharge is given in the following graph.

The total storage of the tank in its present condition is estimated at 15691.31 cu.m Based on this estimate, there will be water available in the pond for almost 119 days in a year. At no point of time, the pond overflows in a normal rainfall year. The total inflow to the tank in a normal rainfall year is estimated at 9927.04 cu.m; the total groundwater recharge will be 6344.75 cu.m. The net inflow estimated for an excess rainfall year is presented below :

Based on this estimate, there will be water available in the pond for 268 days. The pond in its present volume does not over flows even in an excess rainfall period for the assumed catchment. The total inflow to the tank in an excess normal rainfall year is estimated at 6048.50 cu.m; the total groundwater recharge is 2080.3 cu.m.

Proposed Interventions

Based on the field observations and inferences, followed by the data analysis, following were the list of activities proposed for renovating the Vadaperumbakkam Pond.

  • To start with, the pond can be desilted and deepened.

  • The soil could be sued to form bund all around.

  • Revetment need to be provided with toe wall and binding wall.

  • Bush clearance all around the pond and provision of a pathway all around the pond to a width of  1.8m can be provided and fencing may be provided in the left over areas.

  • The roof top down take pipes from the surrounding houses can be diverted into the pond.

  • Also the surface run off from the road can be diverted into the pond through a filter chamber.

  • A recharge well of 1.8m in diameter to a depth of 3m can be provided in the pond to facilitate groundwater recharge.
