Mula Kulam

Mula Kulam

This pond is located on the South side of ChellaKulam in Thirumal Nagar. The approach to this small pond is quite narrow. The pond is roughly square in shape. There was no water in the pond during the time of survey. There was no revetment, inlet or outlet to the pond. The area surrounding the pond is urbanized. Solid waste dumping was observed in the pond. The pond has been deepened by about 0.3 metres recently. There is no liquid waste diversion observed into the pond. The bund in the southern side was being encroached. There is no storm water drain available nearby. Now the pond is fully restored under the Chennai Smart City project funds.

Area, Zone, Division

AREA: 1618.7440000000001 Sq.mtrs    ZONE: 3    DIVISION: 24

Location

This pond is in Division 24 of Zone  3 and is located to the South of Chella Kulam and is in Thirumal Nagar. The approach to this pond is quite narrow and it is a very small pond. The pond is located at North Latitude 13  8'11.58" and East Longitude 80 11'46.31".

Field Observation and Inferences

The pond is roughly square in shape. There is no water in the pond during the time of survey. There is no revetment, inlet or outlet to the pond. The area surrounding the pond is urbanized. Solid waste dumping is observed in the pond. The pond has been deepened by about 0.3m recently. There is no liquid waste diversion observed into the pond. The bund in the southern side is under the process of encroachment. There is no stormwwater drain available nearby.

Based on the TSS output, it is inferred that the total area of the pond is 1553.616 sq.m and the total length of the bund is 161.184m. The average depth of the pond is about 2m.

Impact of Urbanisation

As the original extent of the pond is not available, the level of encroachment could not be traced. The imagery extracted from google earth on 10.06.2016 and 01.06.2002 is presented below and it appears to show no major change on the water spread area of the pond

Pond Storage Estimation

The actual volume stored in the tank during 1987 a normal rainfall year - after losses due to evaporation and recharge is given in the following graph.

The total storage of the tank in its present condition is estimated at 3107.232 cu.m Based on this estimate, there will be water available in the pond for almost 122 days in a year. At no point of time, the pond overflows in a normal rainfall year. The total inflow to the tank in a normal rainfall year is estimated at 2589.81 cu.m; the total groundwater recharge will be 1780.65 cu.m. The estimate was made in an excess rainfall year to see the inflow and outflow status. The actual volume stored in the tank after losses due to evaporation and recharge is given in the following graph.

Based on this estimate, there will be water available in the pond for 268 days. The pond in its present volume does not over flows even in an excess rainfall period for the assumed catchment. The total inflow to the tank in an excess normal rainfall year is estimated at 6,048.50 cu.m; the total groundwater recharge is 2,080.3 cu.m.

Proposed Interventions

Based on the field observation and inferences, following were the list of activities proposed for renovating the pond

  • The pond water spread should be desilted and deepened. The excavated soil can be used for strengthening the bund of the pond.
  • Revetment need to be provided with toe and binding wall.
  • Pathway of 1.2m width to be provided on the bund and fenced.
  • The roof top down take pipes from the nearby houses can be interconnected and diverted into the pond.
  • A recharge well of 1.2m in diameter to a depth of 3m can be provided in the pond to facilitate groundwater recharge.
