PurahKulam – Pondicherypettai is a local pond owned by Revenue Department and maintained by GCC. There is an inlet in the pond. No outlet is found. Water in the pond is pale brownish in colour. Algae bloom seen in the pond. Fishes are observed in the pond. Aquatic birds are seen occasionally. The pond is not connected to any upstream & downstream water sources, gets storage during the monsoon. Benefits from the implementation of this project include improvement of water quality by providing aquatic floating island and diversion of sewage discharge. Due to de-silting, water storage will increase and made available throughout the year. Fish culture will be developed. The pond serves as a spot of recreation to the local residents. With proper counseling and guidance by the GCC Engineers, the Resident Association will take care of the pond and hence, water body will be protected. The pond has been restored under the Chennai Smart City project funds.
