Uthu Kulam

Uthu Kulam

UthuKulam is a pond located on the west side off Perambur - Redhills Road, about 100 meters away. It was chosen for restoration by CMWSSB as part of the Sustainable Water Mission. The pond is roughly oval in shape and has a deeper section in the centre with revetment. There are steps from the bund into the pond. At present, there is no specific catchment to the pond apart from its own in-situ catchment. The area around the pond is urbanized. There is no weed infestation found in the water spread area. Now the pond is fully restored under the Chennai Smart City project funds.

Area, Zone, Division

AREA: 3237.4880000000003 Sq.mtrs    ZONE: 3    DIVISION: 25

Location

This pond is off Perambur - Redhills Road located to the West at a distance of about 100m. It falls in It is located Division 25 of Zone  3. The pond is located at North 13 8'27.01" and East Longitude 8012'13.11".

Field Observation and Inferences

The pond is roughly oval in shape. There is no water in the pond during the time of survey. The pond is provided with a baby pond inside and it is provided with revetment. There are steps provided on the bund into the pond. At present, there is no specific catchment to the pond but for its own in-situ catchment. The area around the pond is urbanized. The bund is in good shape. But for some minor amount of solid waste dumping, there is no liquid waste diversion into the pond. The are around the pond is getting urbanized. A HT line passes through the pond. Based on the interaction with the local community, it is inferred that the pond used to hold water for about 9-10 months in the past, whereas now it holds only for 3  4months in a year. In the past, the pond water was used for washing and bathing by the local community.

and bathing by the local community. Earlier openwells use to be the common groundwater extraction structure in this area. As the openwells of depth ranging from 10m to 12m have gone dry, the community have opted for openwells to meet the daily domestic needs. Borewells in the depth range of 22m to 28m have become the common groundwater extraction structure in the area at present. The Total Dissolved Solids of the borewell water varies from 1000 to 1200 mg/lt. One of the major advantage of this pond is that it is not polluted The quality of stored water is reported to be good and fit for domestic washing. There is no weed infestation found in the water spread area. There is no storm water drain available nearby.  Based on the Total Station Survey output, it is inferred that the total area of the pond is 3272.206 sq.m and the total length of the bund is 226.518m. The average depth of the pond is about 3m.

Impact of Urbanisation

The imagery extracted from google earth on 21.03.2016 and 11.03.2009 is presented below shows no major change on the water spread area of the pond.

Pond Storage Estimation

The actual volume stored in the tank during 1987  a normal rainfall year - after losses due to evaporation and recharge is given in the following graph

The total storage of the tank in its present condition is estimated at 9816.618 cu.m Based on this estimate, there will be water available in the pond for almost 117 days in a year. At no point of time, the pond overflows in a normal rainfall year. The total inflow to the tank in a normal rainfall year is estimated at 4971.11 cu.m; the total groundwater recharge will be 3526.1 cu.m. The estimate was made in an excess rainfall year to see the inflow and outflow status. The actual volume stored in the tank after losses due to evaporation and recharge is given in the following graph.

Based on this estimate, there will be water available in the pond for 268 days. The pond in its present volume does not over flows even in an excess rainfall period for the assumed catchment. The total inflow to the tank in an excess normal rainfall year is estimated at 6048.50 cu.m; the total groundwater recharge is 2080.3 cu.m

Proposed Interventions

Based on the field observations and inferences, followed by the data analysis, following were the list of activities proposed for renovating the Pond.

  • To start with, the pond can be deepened and cleaned in the water spread area.
  • The bund need to be trimmed, strengthened;
  • Revetment need to be provided on the bund of the pond.
  • Bush clearance all around the pond and provision of a pathway all around the pond to a width of  1.8m and properly fenced.
  • A recharge well of 1.2m in diameter to a depth of 3m can be provided in the pond to facilitate groundwater recharge
