Vattamani Kulam

Vattamani Kulam

VattamuniKulam has been chosen for restoration by CMWSSB as part of the Sustainable Water Mission. This pond is on the Madhavaram - Redhills Road. The pond is roughly rectangular in shape with no revetment, inlet, outlet or steps. The area around the pond is fully urbanized. The storm water drain was being diverted into the pond. Rampant solid waste dumping and burning of solid waste was also observed during the survey.The pond has its own in-situ catchment. Based on the interaction with the local community, it is inferred that the pond use to hold water for about 9-10 months in the past and was used for washing and bathing by the local community. Now the pond is fully restored under the Chennai Smart City project funds.

Area, Zone, Division

AREA: 36421.74 Sq.mtrs    ZONE: 3    DIVISION: 30

Location

This pond is in Division 30 of Zone 3 and is located on the Madhavaram - Redhills Road. It is located to the North of the road. It is located to the South of Alex Nagar 1st Street. The pond is located at North Latitude 13 8'46.71" and East Longitude 8014'6.16".

Field Observation and Inferences

The pond is roughly rectangular in shape. There is water in the pond during the time of survey. There is no revetment, inlet, outlet or steps provided in the pond. The area around the pond is fully urbanized. The storm water drain that was diverted into the pond carries sullage water into the pond thereby polluting the pond. Also rampant solid waste dumping and burning of solid waste is observed in the pond. The actual extent of the pond could not be located at site as it appears as a plain ground along with the surrounding areas excepting the portion in the southern side of the pond which has a depression wherein the waste water gets collected. At present, there is no specific catchment to the pond but for its own in-situ catchment. Based on the interaction with the local community, it is inferred that the pond use to hold water for about 9-10 months in the past. In the past, the pond water was used for washing and bathing by the local community. The openwell located by the side of the pond in private land used to give good quality of water used by the local community.

Based on the Total Station Survey output, it is inferred that the total area of the pond is 37,310.59 sq.m and the total length of the bund is 1031.59m. But this includes the adjoining areas also which could not be differentiated from the pond area. Hence the extent as given by the Zonal office is considered for calculation purpose. The total extent of the pond is taken as 11,895.24 sq.m and the depth as 2m. The total length of the bund is estimated at 500 m.

Impact of Urbanisation

The imagery extracted from google earth on 21.03.2016 and 31.08.2001 is presented below shows no appreciable change but at site it is evident that the pond is subjected to severe dumping of solid waste and liquid waste diversion.

Pond Storage Estimation

The actual volume stored in the tank during 1987 a normal rainfall year - after losses due to evaporation and recharge is given in the following Graph

The total storage of the tank in its present condition is estimated at 23,790.48 cu.m Based on this estimate, there will be water available in the pond for almost 89 days in a year. At no point of time, the pond overflows in a normal rainfall year. The total inflow to the tank in a normal rainfall year is estimated at 16,700.46 cu.m;

Based on this estimate, there will be water available in the pond for 111 days. The pond in its present volume does not over flows even in an excess rainfall period for the assumed catchment. The total inflow to the tank in an excess normal rainfall year is estimated at 138,657.46 cu.m; the total groundwater recharge is 26,727.74 cu.m.

Proposed Interventions

Based on the field observations and inferences, followed by the data analysis, following were the list of activities proposed for renovating the Pond.

  • The sullage diversion and solid waste dumping should be stopped first
  • The waste water in the pond should be dewatered and disposed.
  • The pond can be desilted and cleaned in the water spread area.
  • Bund should be formed all around the pond and strengthened;
  • Bush clearance all around the pond should be done
  • The pond should be provided with a proper fence with a gate.
