Chennai: Soon, Metrowater will measure every drop of water flowing through the supply pipelines after the Chennai Smart City Limited (CSCL) obtained approval for a slew of projects designed to help the city manage its water.The Board will also regulate water filling activities of contracted tanker lorries by automating filling points and installing a smart card based monitoring system.

On Friday, a high level project sanctioning committee comprising the bureaucratic heads of the finance and municipal administration departments, as well as funding agency TUFIDCO, approved five smart city projects worth Rs 274.05 crore.

Metrowater has been accorded sanction to install 251 electromagnetic flow meters in its distribution system and water treatment plants. Estimated to cost Rs 11.63 crore, the meters will ensure that “each drop produced is properly accounted for” according to a smart city project official.
