I Almost all water bodies in Chennai have been filled with water hyacinth, which affects not only the storage and inflow of water to the water bodies, but also affects the aesthetics and biodiversity. Diseases spreading vector species of mosquitoes breed freely in the static waters causing environmental degradation by depleting the dissolved oxygen in the water and in particular, speaks on the health of the citizens. Now the harvested water hayacinth is being transported to dumping yards. If it is viewed from a resource angle,it appears to be a valuable resource with several unique properties.
In Chennai, there has been a problem of increasing water hyacinth in almost all water bodies which not only affects the storage and inflow of water to the water bodies, but also effects the aesthetics and bio-diversity. Additionally, disease spreading vector species of mosquitoes breed freely in the static water causing environmental degradation by depleting the dissolved oxygen in the water. This also reflects negatively on the health of the citizens. Greater Chennai Corporation implements to use this water hyacinth and convert it into natural biogas. It also has several useful properties if it is viewed from a resource angle.
Greater Chennai Corporation believes in optimum utilization to make the best out of resources. Biogas generation using water hyacinth is also a great way to dispose waste in an eco-friendly way. GCC has proposed to install one 5ton/day capacity biogas plant on a trial basis. Inside the biogas plant, the harvested hyacinth is crushed and made into slurry and is fed to digesters where the slurry is digested and gas is produced. Furthermore, the biogas produced is used to generate power through a special gas generator.
