Appadurai pond or Tank is located in Thandalam, a predominant Residential area in West Chennai. The rapid growth of Thandalam's economy, population and infrastructure can be attributed to the educational Institutions surrounding the area. Thandalam is surrounded by Maduravoyal, Porur and Ayyappathangal. As per the Master plan document, Appadurai pond is surrounded by residential areas. The Tank is bounded by the Appadurai pillai Street on the South, and residences on all the other sides. Several neighborhoods have developed along the lake boundaries in all sides, surrounding the lake. The development of several residential neighbourhoods surrounding the lake over the past decade has resulted in curtailing the natural hydrological flow of water. The lake acts as a water storage pond in the midst of residences. Although the developments have resulted in shrinking of the tank area, the pond acts as water storage and helps in maintaining the water table in the neighborhood. However the tank does not possess any recreational value to the residents so far, as such facilities have not been developed in the tank. Appadurai pond has local catchment only. The pond has been restored under the Chennai Smart City project funds.
