Chinnakeni Kulam is located in the Karapakkam area in the OMR road and forms part of Greater Chennai Corporation. It is one of the stops on the Old Mahabalipuram Road, or commonly referred to, as OMR. It is situated between the IT Hubs of Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur - parallel to Injambakkam on the ECR Highway. Karapakkam, which is a part of the Greater Chennai is home to a number of BPO, IT/ITES companies and other IT/ITES companies such as Mahindra Satyam, Pantheon, Scope International, Capgemini India, Tata Consultancy Services, Accenture India, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Photon Infotech and Infosys are situated along the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR). The development of several residential neighbourhoods surrounding the lake over the past decade has resulted in curtailing the natural hydrological flow of water and the lake acts as a water storage pond in the midst of residences. The Tank is present in the midst of the residences of the Karapakkam Area. The pond abuts the Rangasamy Street and it is a rain fed pond. The pond has been used for the recharge of ground water table and has been used for drinking water purposes. The present condition of water is good which is evident from fish growth and water lily. Catchment Area or drainage basin or watershed is the extent or an area of land where surface water from rain and waste water let out from households impounds to a single point at a lower level, such as a river, lake, reservoir, estuary, wetland, sea, or ocean. The drainage basin acts as a funnel by collecting all the water within the area covered by the basin and channeling it to a single point. Chinnakeni Kulam is located in the midst of recently developed residential areas in Karapakkam. These recent developments and human interventions have resulted in altering/bringing up changes in the original area of Karapakkam. Rain water from the local catchment is the main source for this pond. The pond has been restored under the Chennai Smart City project funds.
