Gangai Amman Koil Pond
Gangai Amman Koil Pond is a temple pond located in Manthoppu colony adjacent to Gangai Amman Temple, Maduravoyal. Water is partly filled and greenish in colour. Fishes are found in the pond which is protected with compound wall in all the four sides and provided with a walkway. The pond is surrounded by residential houses on three sides and temple in one side. The pond is not connected to any upstream or downstream water sources. Catchment area is connected to the pond by natural gradient. The pond gets storage during the monsoon rains. Benefits from the implementation of this project include improvement of water quality by and year-round storage of water in the pond with an inlet provided. The pond has ground water recharge potential and hence fish culture will be developed. The pond will serve as a spot of recreation for the residents with walking path for the local residents, children’s play ground and LED lighting arrangements. Harvesting rooftop rain water from the nearby houses and buildings will increase the inflow into the pond. With proper counseling and guidance by the GCC Engineers, the people of the area will take care of the pond and hence, water body will be protected. The pond has been restored under the Chennai Smart City project funds.
