Kosapur Pond (Chelliamman Kulam)

Kosapur Pond (Chelliamman Kulam)

Kosapur pond is located on the north of the Kosappur - Andarkuppam Road. Pond is roughly square in shape and water in the pond during the time of survey appears to be clear and good. But the bund was infested with weed and thorny bushes to some extent. The pond was free from encroachment and pollution. Now the pond is fully restored under the Chennai Smart City project funds

Area, Zone, Division

AREA: 4046.86 Sq.mtrs    ZONE: 2    DIVISION: 17

Location

This pond is in Division 17 of Zone 2 and is located on the Kosappur  Andarkuppam Road. It is located to the North of the road. The pond is located at North Latitude 13 11'04.01" and East Longitude 80 14'10.97".

Field Observation and Inferences

The pond is roughly square in shape. There is water in the pond during the time of survey. This pond is on the main road. It still remains as a pond with all ots characteristics. There is steps constructed on one side of the pond. The bund is infested with weed and throny bushes but not very dense. The water appears to be good and clear. The pond is free from encroachment and pollution. Based on the Total Station Survey output, it is inferred that the total area of the pond is 4298.75 sq.m and the total length of the bund is 268.71 m. The average depth of the pond is about 2.5 m.

Impact of Urbanisation

The imagery extracted from google earth on 16.04.2017 and 09.02.2014 is presented below shows no major change on the water spread area of the pond.

Pond Storage Estimation

The actual volume stored in the tank during 1987 a normal rainfall year - after losses due to evaporation and recharge is given in the following Graph

The total storage of the tank in its present condition is estimated at 10,746.88 cu.m. Based on this estimate, there will be water available in the pond for almost 115 days in a year. At no point of time, the pond overflows in a normal rainfall year. The total inflow to the tank in a normal rainfall year is estimated at 6,407.06 cu.m; the total groundwater recharge will be 4,572.21 cu.m. The estimate was made in an excess rainfall year to see the inflow and outflow status. The actual volume stored in the tank after losses due to evaporation and recharge is given in the following Graph.

Based on this estimate, there will be water available in the pond for 268 days. The pond in its present volume does not over flows even in an excess rainfall period for the assumed catchment. The total inflow to the tank in an excess normal rainfall year is estimated at 6048.50 cu.m; the total groundwater recharge is 2080.3 cu.m. The pond can be retained as such with minor interventions such as protection by way of fencing, provision of pathway on the bund, strengthening the steps etc.,

Proposed Interventions

Based on the field observations and inferences, followed by the data analysis, following were the list of activities proposed for renovating the Pond.

  • Strengthening the bund and provision of pathway
  • Vegetation clearance on the bund and provision of fencing.
  • Reworking and strengthening the steps.
  • A recharge well of 1.2m in diameter to a depth of 3m can be provided in the pond to facilitate groundwater recharge.
