P.T.C. Quarters Pond - Pillayar Kovil Kulam
Located PTC Quarters Pond is located in the Thuraipakkam area in the OMR road and forms part of Greater Chennai Corporation. Okkiyam Thoraipakkam is on the eastern banks of the Pallikaranai marsh area. Thoraipakkam is 3 km in length, starting from Perungudi to its north. Okkiyam Thoraipakkam has experienced substantial growth over the past decade, and it serves as a residential and commercial hub for neighbourhood in the south of Chennai. A number of IT companies are based in Thoraipakkam. The development of several residential neighbourhoods surrounding the lake over the past decade has resulted in curtailing the natural hydrological flow of water and the lake acts as a water storage pond in the midst of residences. The Lake has been used for the recharge of ground water table. Rain water from the local catchment is the main source. Though it is non-system tank, PTC Quarters Pond inflow and outflow of water was disturbed due to the urbanization activities and human interventions. PTC Quarters Pond is a small percolation pond and also receives water from the local catchment for its resource. It receives water from local adjoining areas. The excess water let in the pond escapes through the road naturally. Presently, this pond has no connectivity to any hydrological system. Investigation on its connectivity to a large hydrological system to Kovalam sub-basin is being carried out. The pond has been restored under the Chennai Smart City project funds.
